Hey everyone! If you’ve just finished your post-graduation and you’re thinking about government jobs, this one’s for you. I’ve been there confused, excited, and a little scared all at once. A couple of years ago, I wrapped up my M.A. in History, and like many of you, I wanted a stable job with some respect attached to it. Government jobs seemed perfect, but figuring out how to get one? That was a rollercoaster! I’m here to share how I went from scratching my head to landing a job, with some simple tips I picked up along the way. Let’s dive in!
Why I Chose Government Jobs
So, picture this: it’s 2022, I’ve got my M.A. degree in hand, and I’m sitting at home wondering what’s next. My friends were jumping into private jobs some with cool offices and big promises but I wasn’t sold. My uncle, who’s been a railway clerk for years, kept telling me how government jobs mean no worries about getting fired, plus you get a pension later. My mom was all about it too she’d say, “Get a sarkari naukri, and we’ll all sleep peacefully!” Honestly, that stuck with me.
I wasn’t some genius student just an average guy who studied hard enough to pass. But after post-graduation, I felt ready for something bigger. Government jobs sounded tough to crack, but I thought, “Why not give it a shot?” That’s where my story starts.

Figuring Out the Options
The first thing I realized was there’s a whole bunch of government jobs out there. It’s not just about being a peon or a clerk my M.A. opened doors to better stuff. I grabbed a cup of chai, sat with my notebook, and started jotting things down. Here’s what I found:
- UPSC Exams: You know, the IAS and IPS dream. It sounded amazing, but when I saw the syllabus, I was like, “Nope, not yet!” Too much for a newbie like me.
- SSC Jobs: These are exams for posts in government offices like assistants or inspectors. I liked this one because it felt more my speed.
- Teaching: With my M.A., I could try for lecturer jobs through something called UGC NET. I loved history, so this was tempting.
- Bank Jobs: My friend told me about bank PO exams. Not my thing, but good to know.
- Railways: My uncle’s area! They hire for all kinds of roles, and a postgraduate degree helps you aim higher.
I didn’t know all this at first I just kept asking around and digging online. My tip? Don’t overthink it. Pick one or two options that feel right for you and start there.
Hunting for Vacancies
Okay, so I knew what I wanted sort of but where do you find these jobs? At first, I’d wait for my dad to toss me the newspaper. He’d circle ads and say, “Apply for this!” But that was slow, and I’d miss stuff. Then my cousin told me about some websites, and that changed everything.
I started checking:
- Employment News: It’s a paper, but they’ve got a site too. Old-school but useful.
- SSC Website: For SSC exams, they post everything there.
- Telegram Groups: I joined a few where people share job alerts. One day, I saw a UGC NET notice just in time to apply.
I almost missed an SSC exam once because I didn’t check the date big mistake! After that, I made it a habit to look every morning while sipping my tea. Trust me, stay on top of it, or you’ll kick yourself later.
Applying: A Little Messy at First
Applying wasn’t as simple as I thought. You’ve got these online forms, and they ask for everything your marks, photo, even a signature! My first try was a flop. I uploaded my photo, but it was too big, and the site wouldn’t take it. I had to resize it on my phone, and I was sweating by the end.
Here’s what I learned:
- Get Stuff Ready: I kept my degree, Aadhaar card, and a scanned signature in a folder on my laptop. Made life easier.
- Fill Carefully: One typo in your name, and you’re toast. I’d write, check, then hit submit.
- Pay the Fee: It’s usually a hundred bucks or so. I used my brother’s UPI once when my card didn’t work.
- Dates: I stuck them on my wall last date to apply, exam date, everything.
After a couple of tries, I got better. When I applied for an SSC job and it went through, I felt like I’d won half the battle!
Studying: The Hard Part
Exams were the real deal. For SSC, I had to study math, English, reasoning, and GK. History helped with GK, but math? I hadn’t touched it since school! I started panicking, but my sister said, “Just practice a little every day.” She was right.
I kept it simple:
- Books: I got a basic math book from the market and a GK one with short facts. Nothing fancy.
- Old Papers: I’d solve them with a pencil, messing up at first but getting faster.
- News: I’d read about government stuff like new laws or schemes. It came up a lot.
- Time: I’d set my phone timer to practice fast. Took me ages at first, but I got there.
I’d study in my room, sometimes late at night with a cup of coffee. One time, I nailed a practice test, and I was so pumped I couldn’t sleep! Keep at it it gets easier.
Waiting and Facing the Interview
After my SSC exam, I waited weeks for results. I’d check the website every day, heart pounding. When I passed, I was over the moon but then came the interview. I was nervous as heck. What if they asked something I didn’t know?
The interview was in a government office super formal. They asked why I wanted the job and a bit about history (lucky me!). I stumbled when they asked about some new policy, but I just said, “Sorry, I’m not sure,” and they moved on. Be yourself they don’t expect perfection.
Finally Getting the Job
In 2023, I got the news I’d bagged an assistant job in a government department! The pay’s decent around ₹35,000 a month and I get holidays and stuff like medical leave. My family threw a little party, and I felt on top of the world. Now, I’ve been working a year, and it’s steady. I’m even saving for a trip next year!
What I’d Tell You
Looking back, here’s what worked for me:
- Start Now: Don’t wait check out jobs even before your results.
- Stay on Track: Write down deadlines so you don’t forget.
- Study Easy: Pick simple books and practice a lot.
- Ask Around: Friends or family in government jobs can help.
- Keep Going: I messed up a test once, but the next one worked out.
What’s Happening in 2025?
It’s April 2025 now, and there’s stuff opening up! SSC exams are on, and I hear UGC NET’s coming in June great for teaching jobs. Banks are hiring too. Peek at those sites I mentioned something might catch your eye.
Wrapping Up
Getting a government job after my M.A. wasn’t quick or easy, but it was worth it. I went from clueless to confident, and you can too. Grab a notebook, start looking, and don’t give up. Your chance is out there I’m rooting for you!
What do you think? Started applying yet? Let me know!
