Hey! So, I’m guessing you’re here because you’ve got a post-grad degree and you’re wondering if a police job could be your thing. I totally get it I’ve been there! My name’s, well, let’s just say I’m a regular guy from Karnataka who finished his MA a couple of years back and decided to try for a police gig. It’s been a wild ride, and I thought I’d spill it all here my mess-ups, my small wins, and what I’ve figured out about police vacancies for folks like us. No fancy stuff, just my story. Grab a snack and let’s chat!
How I Got Hooked on the Idea
After I got my MA in History, I was kinda lost. My mom kept saying, “Be a teacher!” but I wasn’t feeling it. Then one evening, I was hanging out with my uncle he’s this old-school sub-inspector who retired a while back. He started yapping about his police days, like catching thieves and helping people out of jams. I was like, “Whoa, that sounds cool!” It wasn’t just about a job; it felt big, like I could do something that matters. Plus, I figured with my master’s, I could aim for something better than just a basic constable post maybe a sub-inspector or even dream big with IPS. That’s when I started digging into it.
Where I Started Looking
I had no clue where to find police jobs at first. My buddy Ravi, who’s obsessed with government stuff, told me to check online, but I’m not great with computers. So, I started easy my dad’s old Employment News paper. Every Sunday, I’d sit with a pen, circling anything that said “police” and “graduate.” It was slow, but I found a few things.
Then Ravi dragged me into the online world. He showed me sites like the Karnataka State Police page ksp.karnataka.gov.in and some job boards like freejobalert.com. I’d scroll through them on my phone, squinting at the tiny text. Each state’s got its own police site, like Punjab’s or Tamil Nadu’s, and they post about openings there. I even peeked at X sometimes people share job news super fast there, like a heads-up from random strangers. It’s messy, but it works. My tip? Keep checking, even if it’s boring. Stuff pops up when you least expect it.

What Jobs Can We Even Get?
Okay, so here’s what I found out about jobs we can try for with a post-grad degree. It’s not just one thing there’s a bunch!
- Sub-Inspector (SI): This is my goal. It’s higher up than constable, and you get to boss people around a bit nicely, of course! Most places want a bachelor’s, but my MA makes me feel like I’ve got a shot at standing out. Pay’s good too starts around 35,000 bucks a month here.
- Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI): A little lower than SI, but still decent. My cousin said it’s a chill way to start if you’re not sure.
- Inspector: This one’s trickier to get fresh out of college, but it’s on my radar for later. They run the show at stations.
- Indian Police Service (IPS): The big one! You’ve gotta crack this crazy UPSC exam, and it’s tough. I’m not there yet, but maybe someday.
- Fancy Jobs: There’s stuff like cybercrime or traffic police too. I don’t get the techy side, but if you do, it’s worth a look.
Every state’s got its own openings. Like, Karnataka had SI posts last year, and I saw Punjab Police talking about 1700+ constable jobs for 2025. Some of those are cool with post-grads too. It’s all about what you’re into.
Do I Even Qualify?
Before I got too hyped, I had to make sure I fit the rules. Here’s what I learned:
- Degree: My MA works fine. Most jobs just need a bachelor’s, but I think my extra degree looks good on paper.
- Age: This freaked me out. They usually want you between 21 and 28. I’m 26, so I’m okay, but some states stretch it to 30 for post-grads or special groups. Check your state!
- Fitness: Oh man, this was a shock. You’ve gotta run and jump and stuff. Guys need to be at least 165 cm tall, girls 150 cm. I’m tall enough, but I’m not exactly a gym rat.
- Tests: There’s always a written exam, then a physical one. For IPS, it’s a whole marathon of tests. I’m starting small with SI for now.
I remember measuring myself with Ravi’s tape he was cracking up while I stood against the wall. It’s funny till you realize they’re serious about it!
My First Try at Applying
Applying was a mess at first. I saw this SI post for Karnataka and got all excited, but I missed the last date because I didn’t read the ad right. I was so mad at myself! Here’s how it’s gone since then:
- Spot the Ad: Check the police site or papers. It tells you what’s open and who can apply.
- Fill the Form: It’s online mostly. I’d sit there typing my name, degree, and all that. You need a photo and signature too mine was blurry once, and I had to redo it.
- Pay Up: It’s like 200-500 rupees. I’d use my dad’s card and pray it worked.
- Get the Admit Card: They send you this ticket for the exam. I lost mine once and nearly cried running back home for it.
- Study: I grabbed some old papers from a shop near my house and studied GK, math, whatever. My history stuff helped a bit.
My first exam was nuts tons of people, sweaty hands, and me guessing half the answers. I didn’t pass, but I got the hang of it.
The Physical Test Scare
So, I finally cleared a written test for an SI spot, but then came the physical part. I’m not sporty my idea of exercise was walking to the tea stall! They wanted us to run 1600 meters in a few minutes, jump over stuff, and not collapse. I started jogging every day, tripping over dogs and rocks while my brother laughed. Test day was rough I huffed and puffed but made it through. Barely. Girls have it a bit easier with shorter runs, but it’s still no picnic. My advice? Start moving now, even if it’s just around your house.
What I’ve Picked Up Along the Way
This whole thing’s been a rollercoaster. Here’s what I’d tell you from my screw-ups and little victories:
- Wait It Out: Jobs don’t show up daily. I’d check sites every week and just chill till something fit.
- Get Fit: Even if you’re lazy like me, start small. It’s less scary when you’re ready.
- Study Simple: I wasted time on random junk at first. Stick to what they ask GK, math, that stuff.
- Ask Around: My uncle, Ravi, even a neighbor who’s a constable they all had tips I needed.
- Keep Going: Failing sucks, but I’m trying again. It’s like leveling up each time.
What’s Open Now in 2025
It’s April 2025 as I write this, and I’ve seen some stuff popping up. Punjab Police has over 1700 constable spots some are cool with post-grads, and the exam’s in May. Karnataka’s got SI openings coming soon I’m glued to their site. And if you’re into central jobs, SSC CPO’s got stuff for CAPF. Just poke around online or X for “police jobs 2025” you’ll find something fresh.
Still Chasing It
I haven’t got my police job yet, but I’m not giving up. Writing this feels like passing on what I’ve been through maybe it’ll save you some headaches! Whether you want to be an SI, IPS, or just wear that uniform, there’s something out there for us post-grads. It’s tough, but it’s doable. What about you? You applying for anything? Hit me up I’d love to know how you’re doing with your own chase!
