Hey, you! So, you’ve got your post-graduation degree, huh? Or maybe you’re almost there, counting down the days till you’re done with exams. Either way, welcome to the club! I’m guessing you’re wondering what to do next because that’s exactly where I was a couple of years back. My name’s not important, but my story might help you out. After finishing my M.Com, I decided to chase a government job. It wasn’t easy, but it worked out, and I want to tell you how I did it my ups, downs, and all the little tricks I picked up along the way.
Why I Picked Government Jobs
When I got my degree, I was kind of lost. My buddies were running off to private companies some joined big firms, others tried startups. Me? I wasn’t so sure. I grew up watching my uncle work in a government office. He’d come home on time, never stressed about losing his job, and now he’s retired with a pension. That life looked good to me steady, safe, and something I could count on. Private jobs felt risky, like you could be out the door any day.
Plus, having a master’s degree meant I could aim higher than just basic posts. With an M.Com, I wasn’t stuck applying for clerk jobs I could go for officer roles or banking positions. Government jobs for post-graduates pay better and come with respect. Who doesn’t want that, right? So, I made up my mind: I’d try my luck with government vacancies.

Figuring Out Where to Start
I didn’t know much at first. I’d sit with my old laptop, scribbling notes, trying to figure out what jobs were out there. My sister’s husband, who works in a government school, gave me the first push. “Look online,” he said. “They post everything there.” So, I started digging.
I found websites like Sarkari Naukri and Employment News. Those places list all kinds of government jobs central ones, state ones, railways, banks, everything. Since I had a master’s, I saw stuff like:
- Officer Jobs: Things in banks or PSUs like BHEL.
- Bank Posts: Like SBI PO fancy title for a bank officer.
- Teaching Gigs: Lecturer jobs if you pass something called NET.
- Big Shots: IAS or IPS through UPSC, though that sounded scary!
I jotted down what clicked with my commerce degree mostly banking and office jobs. My uncle said, “Check your state’s website too.” I’m from Rajasthan, so I looked at the RPSC site and saw openings for accountants and inspectors. It felt like a treasure hunt every day, I’d find something new!
The Hard Truth: It’s a Fight
I got excited at first like, “Oh, I’ll apply for this SBI job and be set!” Then I heard millions apply for just a handful of spots. My heart sank a bit. My neighbor’s son, who got into SSC last year, told me, “It’s tough, but you can do it if you work hard.” He was right. It’s a battle, but my M.Com gave me a little boost some jobs only take post-grads, so the crowd’s smaller.
Still, every job had rules. Some wanted 60% marks in your degree mine was 62%, so I was safe. Others cared about age I was 24 then, and most jobs wanted you under 30. Lucky me! But you’ve got to check that stuff before applying, or you’re wasting time.
How I Got Ready
I picked the SBI PO exam to start with. Banking sounded fun I’m good with numbers, and the pay’s decent, like ₹35,000 to start. But preparing? Man, that was rough.
The exam had math, reasoning, English, and general knowledge. I pulled out my college books for math, but they weren’t enough. I borrowed a beat-up RS Aggarwal book from a friend best decision ever. I also joined a coaching class near my house for a month. Cost me ₹4,000, but the teacher showed me shortcuts, like how to solve percentage problems fast.
Here’s a tip: practice papers! I found some free ones online and timed myself. At first, I’d panic and leave half the questions. After weeks of trying, I got better. My neighbor’s son said, “Read the paper every day.” So, I’d skim The Hindu for news budget stuff, new laws, whatever. It helped a ton in the GK section.
I also tried UPSC once crazy hard! Too much to study, and I didn’t make it past the first round. If you’re braver than me, go for it just start early.
Applying: My Mess-Ups and Wins
Applying was its own drama. For SBI, it was all online I filled a form, uploaded my degree, and paid ₹500. Easy. But for a Rajasthan government job, I had to print stuff, attach photos, and mail it. Once, I forgot my signature such a dumb mistake! They rejected it, and I felt like an idiot. Always double-check, okay?
I bombed my first SBI attempt missed the cut-off by a few marks. It hurt, but I kept going. Next, I tried an RPSC accountant job. Took forever exam, then interview, then waiting months for results. But one day, I checked the list online, and there was my name! I ran around the house yelling I couldn’t believe it.
Why It’s Worth It
Why didn’t I quit? The perks! My RPSC job pays ₹45,000 a month now, plus extra for rent and travel. My friend in a private company makes less and stresses all the time. I get holidays, medical stuff covered, and a pension later. My uncle’s living proof retired and chilling.
Post-graduates like us get cooler jobs too. Bank POs can become managers. UPSC folks run districts! Even teaching pays ₹50,000+ if you crack NET. That’s what kept me going.
Stuff I Wish I Knew Sooner
If I could go back, here’s what I’d do different and maybe it’ll help you:
- Play to Your Strengths: I picked commerce jobs because I like math. Find what you’re good at.
- Keep Looking: New jobs show up all the time SSC, banks, railways. Check every week!
- Study Smart: Learn the exam style. Banking’s about speed; UPSC’s about depth. Get books or ask someone who’s done it.
- Talk to People: My uncle and neighbor’s son saved me. Find your own helpers.
- Don’t Rush: Results take ages. My RPSC gig took six months. Be cool with waiting.
Jobs I’ve Seen Lately (Early 2025)
I still peek at job sites, and here’s what’s hot around April 2025:
- SSC CGL: Office jobs, some need a master’s. Apply by summer, maybe.
- Bank PO: SBI or IBPS forms might open in July or August.
- NET Exam: Teaching jobs next one’s probably in June.
- RPSC Stuff: Rajasthan had accountant posts last month; more could come.
- Railways: They need post-grads for accounts sometimes check their site.
Dates change, so look it up yourself. I learned that after missing a deadline once!
The Emotional Stuff
It wasn’t all fun. I’d fail a test and feel like trash. My mom would say, “Try again, beta.” She was right every flop taught me something. When I got my job, I cried a little happy tears! If you’re struggling, hang on. We’ve all been there.
You’ve Got This!
That’s my tale how a confused M.Com grad like me ended up with a government job. It took sweat, some tears, and a lot of hope, but I’m here now. You can do it too!
